I am a criminal attorney on a mission to make your legal fiction or drama drip with authenticity and credibility.
How Did I Start Consulting on Books, TV and Film?
Before law school, I worked in television and film. It didn't take long for my passion in criminal law to take over, and I became a criminal attorney in 2003. I have been very successful in my career as both a criminal defense attorney and prosecutor.
Growing up and living in Los Angeles, I have had many friends in the entertainment industry. Soon after becoming an attorney, I started getting calls from friends about projects they or their friends were working on.
What Kinds of Questions Do Writers and Filmmakers Ask?
“Would a defense attorney be the one to investigate a witness’s background?”
“If someone was arrested for murder, could they get out on bail?”
“How might this exonerating evidence come to light?”
“Can the police legally use evidence stolen by a third person?”
“How much does a person have to do to commit attempted murder?”
One filmmaker friend created a fantasy legal system in a fictional world, and I reviewed the rules created for that legal system. Another was filming a documentary about a reformed gang banger and needed some background and understanding about the juvenile justice system. Sometimes people didn’t even know what questions to ask, so we would just talk about their ideas.
I was happy to talk through my friends’ questions and review their drafts. I love what I do, and I jump at any chance to talk to and educate others about criminal law. My friends better understood the world in which they were creating, and were often inspired to write new storylines, characters, and plot twists.
Not Everyone Knows A Criminal Lawyer
It dawned on me that I could help other writers and filmmakers with similar issues. Not everyone has a friend who’s a criminal lawyer. I created this website as a way to reach out and educate non-lawyers about criminal law.

I Can Help You Develop the ABC's of Crime and Legal Projects (Authenticity, Believability, and Credibility)
In my Blog, I discuss common criminal law questions and define criminal law terms. I also post about crime in the news. I write about crime or legal books, movies and television, and talk about how they either get it right or miss the mark. I use what I see in the media as a tool to help educate about misunderstood criminal law concepts.
The Resources page provides simple explanations of criminal law topics. You can also find information about other sites that may be of interest to writers and filmmakers in the crime/thriller/legal genres.
As a consultant and legal technical advisor, I have helped many writers and filmmakers develop authenticity, believability and credibility in their projects. Certainly, not every legal fiction is going to be just like it is in real life. That would make for some very long and dull stories! But understanding reality is critical to creating an authentic work. When you know the truth, you can make conscious, educated choices about your scenes, characters and storylines.
If you have a project idea, a finished draft, an ongoing series, a character with a criminal background, or anything else touching the world of criminal law, I would love to work with you.
